Understanding the basics of Square Dancing
Square Dancing is directed by a square dance "Caller". The Caller strings together a sequence of individual dance calls that places dancers in various positions in the dance cube. Those calls are the building blocks of the choreography that is danced by the individual square dancers, in the squares. There are eight people (four couples) in each square. The square functions as a team for the duration of the dance "tip". After a tip, there is usually a "singing" call.
The Caller will give a sequence of calls that will jumble the dancers up and then the Caller has the challenge of putting them back in their original places. It's like a living puzzle; where the dancers are the pieces and the Caller is mixing the pieces up only to return them to their original spot. The dancers have the challenge of listening to the calls and doing the right move. At times, the square dancers are successful. But when they aren't it can become a comedy of errors as they attempt to regroup and jump back into dancing.

Mainstream Square Dancing
Mainstream provides a wide variety of calls, including most of the building blocks calls. Many of the Mainstream Calls have been used in traditional square dance for generations. Mainstream is taught at the beginner's level.
Denim and Lace Dance Club offers Mainstream (beginner's) lessons at scheduled intervals. Check our Calender of Events for dates and times.

Plus Square Dancing
Plus adds calls, most of which were created in the 1970's. Some of these are large pattern calls (like Relay The Deucey, Spin Chain And Exchange The Gears, Load The Boat). Often the Plus calls are taught and danced from one position only. Plus dancers must have a firm knowledge of Mainstream in order to fulfill the calls of the Caller. Plus Square Dancing Lessons are offered at various scheduled intervals as well.
Round dancing
Round dancing is choreographed and cued ballroom dancing. In standard ballroom dancing, the man has to think of what figures he wants to do to this music and then he has to lead the woman to do those figures. Most men just aren’t that sharp—to do at least three things at the same time: think up the choreography, make his feet do what he has thought up, and lead the lady to do it with him.
Round dancing allows the man to simply follow the direction of the cuer. It's that easy. No more stress! Just enjoy the dance!

Line Dancing
A line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people dance in one or more lines or rows without regard for the gender of the individuals, all facing either each other or in the same direction, and executing the steps at the same time.
Dances are defined by the number of walls the dancer will face during the duration of the dance.
One wall indicates that there are no turns in the dance and all dancer will face the front wall.
Two walls indicates that there will be a change in the direction of two walls. Usually front and back wall.
Four walls indicates that there will be a change in the sequence of dance and the dance will face all four walls of the room by the end of the dance.
Denim and Lace Dance Club offers basic Line Dance Instruction at every dance.
